What does perplexity.ai mean as a referrer in my analytics?

23 September 2026 · by Nordva, who make Nordva Launch

The short answer

It means someone clicked a link to your site in Perplexity, the AI search tool, usually one of the sources it cites under an answer. The referrer tells you Perplexity sent the visit, and nothing more: not the question, not the answer, not which citation. The page they landed on is your best clue to what they asked.

Why visits show it

Perplexity answers a question in its own words and lists the pages it drew on as citations. When someone clicks one of those sources in a browser, the browser tells your site where the click came from, and your analytics records perplexity.ai (some tools keep the www. and show www.perplexity.ai; it is the same thing).

What it hides

Only the site name arrives. When a click goes from one site to another, browsers by default send just the origin, not the full address; MDN documents this as the default referrer policy, strict-origin-when-cross-origin. So the thread’s address, and with it the question and the answer, never reach you.

You also can’t tell from the referrer whether you were the first source or the fifth, or whether Perplexity described your product correctly before the click.

Some visits lose the referrer entirely. A link marked rel="noreferrer" sends nothing, and so does a link copied out of an answer and pasted into the address bar. Those visits land in direct, and nothing in them points back to Perplexity.

How to follow these visits

  1. List visits by referring site and filter for perplexity.ai.
  2. Look at the landing pages. For a citation click, the landing page is the page Perplexity cited, so it tells you which of your pages it trusts, and roughly what people asked.
  3. Check those pages are current. Visitors arrive expecting what Perplexity told them; a changed price or feature on the page they land on can cost you the visit.
  4. Follow the visitors past the landing page: did they sign up, come back, pay?

You can’t tag the links Perplexity picks. You can tag the ones you place yourself (a link you paste into a thread you share, for example), so they stay apart from the ones Perplexity chose:

Whether AI assistants in general are worth your attention has its own page.

With Nordva Launch

Launch counts perplexity.ai and www.perplexity.ai under AI assistants, next to search, social, email, paid, referral and direct. A visit whose utm_source starts with perplexity counts there too, even without a referrer, unless its medium says paid or email. With a waitlist form or identify after signup, and Stripe connected (read-only, every plan), you can see whether those visitors became paying customers.

When Launch is the wrong tool

If you want to know how often Perplexity cites you when nobody clicks, analytics can't show it; you need a tool that runs the searches and reads the answers.
